Sean Schemmel (Goku) and Chris Sabat (Vegeta) attended New York Comic Con today and will also be around tomorrow. Sadly, we were unable to book a video interview with them because of their busy schedules but they took some time to answer our questions via email (and they had some pretty funny answers).
What is your favorite Dragon Ball Z game of all time? (Could be Japan only games as well)
Sean: I don’t like any of them. Chris: Sean doesn’t like any of them. Sean: I’m kidding. Chris: I’m kidding. Sean: Wait, were you? Chris: No. Sean: I have to pee. Chris: Ew. I really loved the Budokai games. Sean: Oh, yeah. I loved those. Chris: Did you? Sean: No. Well, I never played it. Chris: *Sigh*Do you have a top five list of favorite Dragon Ball Z games? If so, what are they?
Sean: Borderlands Sean: Skyrym (job… I call it that.) Chris: Red Dead Redemption Chris: Katamari Damacy Sean: Were those supposed to be DBZ games? Chris: Oh crap, yeah. I guess that would be Budokai 3, Tenkaichi 2, Raging Blast, That PSP title… what was that called?? Sean: I loved the Nintendo DS DBZ RPG…it’s been so long I’ve forgotten the name.Have you both had the chance to play Dragon Ball Xenoverse? If so what are your thoughts on it?
Chris: I was lucky enough to fly to California to meet with NBGI to work on some preproduction for Xenoverse and I loved it. It looks gorgeous and I had a blast with the custom character creator. I think people are really going to dig that.How hilarious was recording the Vegeta Karaoke scene in Battle of Gods? How did you feel about Vegeta stepping outside of his character to save his friends? (Chris)
Chris: Haha. I was terrified to find out what Vegeta has to sing. Everyone told me about it and I still hadn’t seen it. Ryo Horikawa (the Japanese voice of Vegeta) has a much higher voice than I do, plus he’s a trained musical theater guy so I wondered if I was even going to be able to sing it. So the moment we got the materials from FUNimaiton to dub Battle of Gods (it was dubbed at my Studio, Okratron 5000) I immediately told my engineer “GO IMMEDIATELY TO THE KARAOKE SCENE!” Turns out it was much easier than I thought and it turned out to be hysterically fun.Were you guys confident that this movie would release outside of Japan eventually?
Chris: Of course. Sean: Yes. I was.How excited were you guys to do another Dragon Ball Z movie? Especially after its been so many years since we had one.
Sean: Totally excited! Chris: Elated. A dream come true. We’ve been working on the old material for so long, we had grown tired of it. This was a fresh injection of inspiration for all of us.There was a point in time where the Dragon Ball Z movies would be dubbed years later. How excited where you guys to start around the same time frame?
Chris: Very, because this was the first time we had to WAIT for a movie that had already been released in Japan to dub it. Sean: I love Garnier Fructis Shampoo.What were your favorite scenes in the movie?
Chris: Vegeta’s “Bingo” scene, of course and his oddly out-of-character feelings towards Bulma. I loved some of Hercule’s goofiness in the Extended version. Sean: When the Dragon gets nervous about Lord Beerus, Vegeta singing. And doing my Vegeta impression at the end.
