lol even lunch is there looks like this game is gonna beat tenkaichi 3 in characters quantity

    • TheGameTagerZ

Don’t expect a good amount to be playable by the way. Or at least that’s the safe assumption.

      • DI

I know but supports are still characters so they are part of the amount

        • Bobby Jennings/Godless

It can’t beat Tenkaichi 3 of most of the characters shown are just supports 😡

          • DI

So? They are part of the roster

            • Bobby Jennings/Godless

No. That makes absolutely no sense…

All of Tenkaichi’s characters are playable where with this, some are supports.

You still count supports as part of the game’s roster of playables?

              • TheGameTagerZ

To be fair it says 100 characters not 100 playable characters.

Some say we might get 26 but I’m thinking somewhere along the lines of like 40 or so who knows. But One Piece was advertised the same way. Plus almost everyone in Tenkaichi played the same so when they said they have over 126 characters or what every number it was it was really like 50 unique ones.

                • Bobby Jennings/Godless

That’s true. Also I see what DI meant now so apologies for that as well.

I’d say we’ll get 40. We usually get around that anyway for these kinda games.

                • British_Otaku

You have a point with how they are marketing the character line up but I disagree on Tenkaichi and would say basically all of them are unique based on chains, skills, specials, build and reach. The only ones which really blurred together in the first three (though BT1 was much more shallow) were the great apes who had a limited skill pool.

Semi-off topic aside, it is a shame that Bandai Namco have gotten into the sport of using phrasing their character counts collectively. I would be happier if they hid the character count under the “Over 10” -> “Over 20” -> “Over 30” marketing that they did for Tenkaichi to imply the numbers will keep rising with supports being separate.

                  • TheGameTagerZ

A lot of the characters in Tenkaichi 3 shared moves but they had didn’t ki colors sometimes or different names for the same attack. Even some rush attacks were shared between characters. As far as uniqueness I felt characters like Burter and a few others really stood out as different to me.

                    • British_Otaku

That is only a small sample of any character’s moveset in the BT series though as they have much more than the L2 + Triangle (plus up or down) or L2 + Circle (plus up) which only serve up five attacks which cost energy or BP (I think it was called – it raised with time) to use. BT3 does make them to the most distinct which isn’t terribly distinct but they can be broken down into energy costs, range, start up time, chargeable, homing abillity and rapid fire still. Some variables which are more or less important based on a character’s energy charging speed or other skills.

I find it as harsh as judging a Budokai game or Naruto game only on the special moves.

Rushes? I assume you don’t mean the melee combat (BT2 got that better though I’m not especially good at explaining it), so the cutscene ones are separated into few classes indeed. As some rushes have instant start up but are linear and some rushes have a bit of delay on start up but track the enemy. There are also some rushes within both groups that can hit giants but I can probably count those on my hand.

Burter is one of the least distinct characters to me in BT3 as most of his Triangle attacks mid combo were Flying Kick (which makes him predictable in that sense) and two of his three offensive specials were rushes. He did have a max power skill to teleport around like mad and notable speed (which made him easier to counter with the parry) but he wasn’t very versatile in general.

                    • TheGameTagerZ

I mean IMO Burter seems at least visually different from the others but I’m basing it off his super quick combos (I didn’t use him as my main character because of how predictable he is). My general point that I was trying to get across is with a big roster like that you have to cut a lot of corners back then and as much as I loved Tenkaichi 3 a lot of the characters to me felt very similar to the point where to a degree if you mastered one you pretty much have them all down. Again that’s just how I see this game it’s not only the special moves in general a good chunk were not unique to me.

                    • British_Otaku

I didn’t really see the “cut corners” though I would say that Budokai Tenkaichi (along with other licensed fighters, but yeah) tends to have a lot of transferable skills where knowing the basics of movement and combos will carry you.

The only fighting games where I’d say there isn’t much transferable skills are Smash Bros and BlazBlue (probably Guilty Gear as well), it doesn’t seem like a weakness for one fraction of movesets (which are supposed to be combined with other concepts) to be the defining aspect.

The site only has 24 slots, take that as you will.

                  • TheGameTagerZ

I know, One Piece Super Grand Battle! X did something similar to make it seem like there were less characters. I’m 50/50 on it though.

              • DI

what doesnt make sense is what youre saying cause looks like quantity and playable means the same for you

                • Bobby Jennings/Godless

nvm I feel stupid now….sorry bout that lol

        • British_Otaku

If that is the way you look at it, I suppose you could say this, Jump Ultimate Stars and Gigant Battle 2 have incredible rosters.

I usually only include playable characters even if supports are good just as supports don’t have nearly as much utility or functionality even in a great game.

          • DI

They are in the roster no matter what so they count

  • British_Otaku

Glad you called it a “teaser” instead of a TV commercial like BN did… The latter implies much more than we got. >_>

Still waiting for the demo or 10 seconds of unedited footage. They don’t need to go that far out of their way to say “HEY! WE HAVE SUPPORTS TOO!”

  • randy191993

Really i’m the last one graphic whoring but that looks even worse than the DS one. I heared the gameplay is awesome of the series. But at least making use of a little bit of the 3ds’s power wouldn’t have hurt.

I don’t get how people are saying this game is ugly. These are beautifully drawn and animated sprites. I’ve already got my pre-order in. Really looking forward to revisiting the SNES game that comes with first printings.
